Abstract
Aim: Hypertension is a common disease throughout the world; it is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Most studies showed similar distribution of increased homocysteinemia level and hypertension, and both are related to increased risk of cardiovascular disorders. However, conflicting results have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the hypertension with hyperhomocysteinemia. Material and Methods: A total of 30 hypertensive patients and 30 normotensive subjects were included in the study. Serum levels of homocysteine, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 were measured. Also methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T and MTHFR 1298 polymorphisms were investigated. Results: The healthy group was composed of 16 males and 14 females, ranging in age between 36 and 72 years with a mean age of 49.8±11.3 years. In the hypertensive group, there were 17 males and 13 females, ranging in age between 34 and 71 years with a mean age of 51.1±13.4 years. In hypertensive group, the mean homocysteinemia level was 12.8 ± 3.2 µmol/L in females and 14.5 ± 4.3 µmol/L in males, whereas the mean homocysteinemia level was 9.8 ±2.4 µmol/L in females and 12.3 ± 2.9 µmol/L in males of healthy group. Homocysteinemia levels were found to be significantly higher in hypertensive group and males in both groups (p
