Abstract

‘Whether the originality of Japan can be defined within the framework of a civilization?’ is a difficult question to answer. Among the factors which make this question a difficult one to answer comes the Japanese identification of the ancient Eastern Asian Chinese civilization with its own works, its political government structure, its high culture and the Buddhist religion. Japan has constructed an interesting synthesis of the Chinese civilization and its local religion, Shinto. The process of being part of an ancient civilization began in the 7th century for Japan and from the mid 19th century onwards it took a different turn. Japan’s assertion that it has become a civilization began from the second half of the 19th century when it began to adapt to the modern civilization. Japan initially became a part of modern civilization through imitation and than internalized the process, transformed it and constructed its own original model. Japan’s civilization adventure was quite troublesome in the beginning. Its source of inspiration, the modern civilization was identified with imperialism in the 19th century. At the same time the adaptation of this civilization to Japanese society was realized with draconian Jacobinism. The process of changing civilization resulted in an identity crisis. Japan which overcame the trauma of the Second World War, has successfully adapted the Western civilization to its society. The impacts of this adaptation can be summarized as: high income levels, stable parliamentarian democracy and Japan’s emergence as a regional power. Although certain debates by considering Japan’s originality within its geography continue try to categorize Japan as a separate civilization, in our day, it is possible to identify this country as part of the modern civilization.
