Abstract
Fundamentalism as a theological concept has been evolving through a sociopolitical process during the last fifty years. Lately, the concept has changed in an even more limited and politically based manner, especially with the impact of the Taliban regime coming to power in Afghanistan, the trauma of September 11, and subsequent El-Kaide terrorist activity in the West. Today, the concept has come to be largely associated with radical Islam and terrorism. In the first part, the paper aims to explore the problem behind the conceptual and semantic evolution of fundamentalism and the translation of the word into Turkish. In the second part, the paper analyzes the psychological dynamics underlying fundamentalism as a more universal concept, which states that fundamentalism is trusting blindly and being devoted to the symbiotic relationship with a religious or ideological thought and/or group. Psychodynamic theories of “transitional object and transitional phenomena”, and “large-group identity and large group regression” have been used as epistemological tools.
