Abstract

Language has become the most significant element of interstate communication for political, economic and cultural reasons throughout history. Powerful states used language as a tool for their ambitions such as establishing authority among nations, establishing sovereignty, and betimes colonization. The languages of the states holding political and economic power were desired to be learned by other nations. Economic and sociopolitical reasons determine the basis of language learning. Therefore, these reasons generated the grounds for learning Turkish for many years. When these reasons were combined with practical and fast learning efforts in Turkish, Turkish language teaching books intended for people such as merchants and bureaucrats have been prepared. In this article, the book prepared by Abu Said as the twelfth of Franz Thimm's “Series of Classical European and Oriental Grammars After an Easy and Practical Method” and titled as “Turkish Self-Taught; or, the Dragoman for Travellers in the East Being a New, Practical and Easy Method of Learning the Turkish Language” has been studied. The work, prepared with the intent of teaching Turkish to the European translators referred as "dragoman" in the European literature, has been evaluated in the context of the 19th century. Abu Said's work was chosen as a research subject because, unlike the other Turkish language teaching books in the series being only a dictionary, it has grammar, dialogue, vocabulary and dictionary content, shows the economic and social situation of the period, and is specially prepared for dragoman.
