Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of the deposit bank (public, private and foreign capital) operating in the banking sector in Turkey by using data envelopment analysis method. In the research, the efficiency of 3 public, 8 private and 6 foreign capital deposit banks was investigated for the period of 2000-2018. In the study, interest, non-interest and personnel expenses were taken as input, interest and non-interest incomes were taken as output. According to their capital structures, banks that are effective among public, private and foreign capital banks have been determined. In the study, it was determined that the average efficiency levels obtained according to the years within the framework of the input-output variables used as a result of the data envelopment analysis of the deposit banks are generally similar to each other. In addition, in the analysis of all banks that were subjected to the research, it was observed that bank activities were generally above 90%, except for the periods 1 year before the start of the economic crisis and 1 year after the start of the economic crisis. In the majority of banks, the contribution of personnel expenses to the level of bank efficiency is high. The 2001 economic crisis had a more negative impact on banking activities than the 2008 crisis. In the analyzes made with the output-oriented BCC method, the efficiency levels of the banks are listed as private, public and foreign capital.
