Abstract

Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering (STEM) approach has stood up in science education, and STEM was integrated into the science teaching program revised in 2018. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of classes, during which the activities of STEM were implemented, on the academic success and attitudes of the students towards STEM. In the study, a quasi-experimental design with pretest - posttest control group was adopted. The study group was 5th grade students in a state secondary school in the Northern part of Turkey. They were randomly assigned to the experimental (n=10) and control (n=10) groups. Data were collected through multiple-choice success test specifically developed for the 5th grade unit ''Measuring the Force and Friction'' and STEM attitude scale. The teaching sessions were structured by following lesson plans based on STEM activities for experimental group while for control group textbooks were used as instruction sources. In the analysis of the data, non-parametric tests were used because of the limited number of participants. It was concluded that the teaching sessions based on STEM activities had positive effect on the academic achievement and STEM attitudes of the students.
