Abstract
In the study, the emergence and development of a theoretical framework towards the urban area is tried to be critically analyzed through a historical perspective. The emergence of an urban theory, was firstly analyzed at Karl Marx, Frederick Engels and Max Weber’s studies. In Marx, Engels and Weber’s studies, it is observed that the city is not a single object of analysis. Therefore, it is seen that a systematic approach towards the urban area had not been develop yet. Secondly, the urban theory and urban sociology that had been emerged during the 1920s onwards analyzed in detail in Robert Park and Louis Wirth’s studies who are the representatives of the Chicago School. When Chicago School is evaluated in terms of urban theory, it is observed that human settlements in cities tried to be examined within the framework of biology and ecology concepts; the human settlements adaptation to the physical environment tried to be tackled with the similarities of the formation and processes of adaptation of plants and animals. Thirdly, Contemporary Urban Sociology that examined cities from the capitalist accumulation processes was analyzed in detail at the studies of Henri Lefebvre, Manuel Castells, and David Harvey
