Abstract
The fleet that the Republic of Turkey inherited from the Ottoman Empireconsisted of scrap ships left to rot at the Golden Horn, the battleship Yavuz that was badlydamaged and hence incapable of any maneuver and operation, and a dock where theshipbuilding yards were not operating for the last five years. Moreover, as all naval fieldmanuals and documents had been taken away by the Germans at the end of the World War I,the naval officers were deprived of any information and document concerning the navy. The mobilization efforts geared towards the rebuilding and restructuring of the countryafter the declaration of the republic were also perceptible within the navy. In order to reinforcethe available naval force charged with the sea defense of a country that was surrounded byseas on three sides, it was decided to purchase ships from abroad. The modern ships, which the Turkish navy needed to be able to support ATATÜRK speaceful republican policy symbolized by his motto of Peace at home, peace in the world ,were ordered from Italy owing to the relationships improved with this country in 1929. Purchaseof these ships encouraged the naval officers, who were despised even in the republican perioddue to the defeats in seas as from the Balkan Wars, for the foundation of a new navy andformed the basis of the Turkish navy.During the period between the two World Wars, the navy was effectively used byATATÜRK as a foreign policy instrument. The use of the battleships purchased from Italyagainst the Italian threat in 1934 and in the ensuing years was the indicator of the correct timingof getting these ships, as well as the importance of the navy as a deterrent force in countrydefense. This paper studies the battleships purchased from Italy, based on the reports preparedby the US military attaché in Turkey. These battleships are considered important, as they werethe first surface ships purchased from abroad in the history of Turkish Naval Forces, and theyformed the basis of the modern Turkish Navy.
