Abstract

There was a great need for railways in the years of National Struggle that hadstarted in Anatolia. Railways were restructured by the government of Ankara. ATATÜRKconsidered railways as one of the basic elements of development. Therefore, railways recordedsignificant improvement in the time of ATATÜRK. There were 4.136 km long railway linesremaining from the Ottoman State and an important part of them were run by foreigners. TheTurks could only benefit from those systems, which were run by foreigners in Turkish territories,at a very expensive cost.In the time of ATATÜRK, 3.208 km long railway lines were added to the existing ones. The average length of the lines constructed per year was 200 km Unfortunately; this processcould not be sustained in subsequent years. Turkey has concentrated mostly on roadtransportation in the last 70 years. However, a country that is surrounded by seas on 3 sidesand that possesses rivers and lakes should take advantage of these sources as an importantelement of development. Railways should be as important as naval transportation. Today, thereare 12.000 km long railway lines in Turkey. The increasing importance attached to the railwaysin recent years is evaluated as a favorable development. The only necessary way of improvingthe railways is to protect national interests.
