Abstract

Among the fronts where the Ottoman troops fought during the First World War, the Caucasus (Eastern) Front campaign has generally been considered to consist only of Sarıkamış Battles. It s commonly believed that the Turkish army suffered a crushing defeat and failed in those battles. However, when the battles in the Caucasus Front are analyzed deeply, many successful maneuvers were conducted there. In particular, the fight which lasted for 5 months in Çoruh and Kop lines around Bayburt was exactly an epic resistance. The battles fought in Bayburt region were exemplary for the world. In this region, the brave Turkish soldiers repelled countless enemy attacks and defended the region as much as they could against an enemy who outnumbered them by 5-6 times. Even the local people fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the Turkish army boldly and voluntarily in this region. This patriotism was also the cornerstone of success obtained in the War of Independence in the following years. The battles that started in Bayburt region on 14 March 1916 continued until the Russian occupation of Bayburt on 15 July 1916. The battles in this region evolved in five stages: Battles of Çoruh Basin, Battles of Kaledere, Battles of Kop Mountain, Battles of Bayburt Region and the Withdrawal Operations. The Battles of Bayburt Region are peerless in that they embrace numerous stories of heroism. It is a pity that these are not known. The most important reason for this is the complexity of battles in this region. These battles should be explicated to our people more clearly and be taught to our youngsters.
