Abstract
During the First World War, the main reason behind the British administration’s opening the Çanakkale Front was to capture İstanbul. When the sea war did not succeed, they took their chances by landing. The most forward position in these landings and attacks was the site they reached in Chunuk Bair on August 8. The New Zealand troops in the British Army could enter a trench, which the 25th Regiment was using as an observation site defended by only a small team of machine guns. When they entered the trench, they thought they were very close to conquer İstanbul, and Turkish soldiers thought “İstanbul was in danger”. This trench was located on the southern shoulder of Chunuk Bair, in an area overlooking the head of Sazlı Dere. The New Zealand soldiers, who could hold this trench for a maximum of two hours, had to retreat to the back of the slope due to Turkish assault. The complete expulsion of the British troops from the Chunuk Bair was with the bayonet attack on August 10. During this period, despite the fact that none of the British troops could cross over to the Conktepe [Chunuk Hill], it is believed that the New Zealand troops have reached it. The reason for this impression is considered to be the location of the monument built after the war while Çanakkale and Istanbul was still under British occupation. There are even some publications mentioning this claim. This article examines the struggle of 8 August 1915 at Conkbayırı [Chunuk Bair] to halt the British advance that could result in the occupation of Istanbul. In addition to the examination of the mortal struggle, this study further attempts to establish the location of the farthest trench the British Army reached in Gallipoli.
