Abstract
Since it derives from the verb “consume”, the concept of consumption evokes a negative connotation. However, consumption, in general terms, has always gratified the civilizations financially throughout history. Just as humankind invented machineries and built its mechanical operation, our modern social structure has transformed itself mechanically since industrial revolution. The consumerist society that exists today is the actual outcome of the production styles, of which seeds were spread on those days. Mass production has brought about the necessity of mass consumption, and consumption has been imposed to societies. The artist, who has been obliged to produce consistently in the culture of consumption, has been trying to keep pace with the speed of the market by creating works of art that resemble each other. In fact, all these give us an idea about how an art object turns into an object of consumption. So, how has the work of art, the production which has a halo of uniqueness above its head, come to this point? This article, which involves the process of conversion of work of art into a consumption object, points at some specific artists and works by its issue. Within this finiteness, the presentation of an artistic production as a consumable item has been studied over frequent examples of artists and their works in the trading area, which could be called as the market of art.
