Abstract
In the years 1949-1950, the English Archaeologist J. M. Cook and the Epigraphist-Historian G. Bean made a wide land survey all around the Datça Peninsula, as the results were published in the 47th volume of the "British School of Athens" journals. In these researches, they determined a great number of finds dating from the 7 th century B.C. to the Roman Period around the Datça/Burgaz sites. But on the other hand, they stated no findings dating earlier than the middle of the 4th century B.C. in Tekirburnu/Knidos. As a result of this situation, they claimed as a hypothesis that Knidos first had been founded in Datça/Burgaz, and then, without any plausible reason, had moved to Tekirburnu in the middle 4th century B.C. Thus, the theory of an "Old Knidos" in Burgaz near Datça and separately a "New Knidos" at the end of the peninsula, at Tekir has been created. The following archaeological excavations in the years 1967-77 by the Americans and also by the Selçuk University from 1988-2006, yielded many findings going back even until the Mycenaean Period, opposing to the hypothesis of the English scholars. By this, it is proved now that the old thesis of the existence of an "Old Knidos" and a "New Knidos" is no longer valid. Although the fact that this thesis was discussed and rejected by many scientists, the excavators of the Burgaz site N. Tuna and D. Berges are still going on with their claims of this baseless hypothesis of the English scholars. This article deals with all the evidences of this problem.
