Özet

M.Ö. 14. yyda Hitit, Babil, Asur, Mitanni, Suriye-Filistin, Mısır ve Kıbrıs çemberinde yoğun bir ticaret ağının varlığı günümüze kadar ulaşan metinlerden bilinmektedir. Kuzey Suriyenin en önemli liman kentlerinden biri olan Ugarit kentinin Hitit vassali olmasıyla Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesinde bulunan ticaret yollarının Hitit hâkimiyetine girmesi kolaylaşacak ve Hititler bölgede söz sahibi olacaklardı. I. Sˇuppiluliumanın izlediği akılcı dış politika sayesinde yapılan antlaşma sonucu Ugarit, Hitit hakimiyetine geç- miş, böylece Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesindeki ticari çıkarlar Hititler lehine gelişmiştir.

Abstract

The existence of an extensive trade network within the sphere consisting of the Hittite State, Babylonia, Assyria, Mitanni, Syria-Palestine, Egypt and Cyprus in 14th century BC is known from texts that have survived to the present. As the city of Ugarit which was one of the most important port cities of North Syria became a vassal of the Hittite Kingdom, hence the Hittites were not going to meet with any difficulty in bringing trade routes extending throughout the Eastern Mediterranean region under their control. This was to enable the Hittite s to power in the region. As a result of the agreement that came about from Sˇuppiluliuma I s rational approach in foreign affairs, Ugarit came under Hittite rule and thus the commercial interests of the Eastern Mediterranean region had developed in favor of the Hittites. As expected, a sensitive issue as Ugarit is excessively examined as well as the other subject matters reflected in this study, giving place to many different opinions. Our goal here is to try to find answers to questions: How did Ugarit become the most popular commercial center when at the beginning of 2000 BC the city of Mari and before that Ebla had been trade centers in position to control and regulate the commercial relations of Mesopotamia, Syria and Palestine? What was the Hittite King Sˇuppiluliuma I s part in Ugarit s rise? Moreover, how did Egypt risk losing such an ally while Ugarit was strengthening her ties with the Hittite State? Was the Hittite State able to maintain the strategy regarding Ugarit which was adopted during the time of Sˇuppiluliuma I in following periods by the Hittite kings? While in search for logical answers to these as well as similar questions I will also try to shed light on matters that have not truly been examined till now.
