Abstract
Almost same letters from Hadrian to Ephesus's council and magistrates, inscribed on the wall of Ephesus's bouleuterion, attest request to be bouleutes of Lucius Erastos and Philokyrios, who not Roman citizens but probably Ephesian freedmen. Hadrian's letters to Ephesus praising Lucius Erastos and Philokyrios the ship's captains who had transportted him across the Aegean in AD 124, as recruits to the council, implies that members were at least nominally elected. Letters of Hadrian supported applications for membership in the boule of Lucius Erastos and Philokyrios. The letters are our souce of information for method of election to the Ephesian Senate in this period.
