Abstract
After the Ottoman Emirate founded by Oguz Türkmens in 1299 in Bythinia, it swiftly extended its borders becoming a center of considerable power within two centuries. Subject to certain conditions and exigencies whose impact increased or lessened over time, the state experienced a political transformation toward an empire, whereas its architecture under the same influences evolved to be strong, balanced and mature. This is natural since Ottoman architecture, which was an expression of policies and authority from the beginning, was shaped and created under the same influences that were effective in the formation and development of the state itself. Hence it would be meaningful to analyze the early architecture based on periods determined by major political events and acts. Early Ottoman architecture, free from any prejudices, has been receptive to architectural practices from various cultures and it also has been experimental in its efforts to reach a synthesis of its own. As these early preparatory centuries came to an end, the Ottoman state became a centrally administered empire where the Sunni ideology reigned and which aimed at conquests in the West. As for its architecture, it achieved an indigenous composition with powerful, clear and unifying features symbolized by the hemispherical dome. This confident use of the dome was no doubt a result of the technical and aesthetical solutions that were suggested for static problems as well as the problem of transition from the orthogonal system to the circular dome throughout centuries. These suggestions and experimentations were on the agenda of Ottoman architecture all along and were at the focus of efforts to evolve towards a classical age in Ottoman architecture. On the other hand, bathhouses emerged in Ottoman architecture as building programs in which dome and vault superstructures were implemented in very varied combinations along with numerous transition elements. Given the modesty of bathhouses and their restricted sizes, which are a result of efforts to create innovative superstructures with imaginative effects, call to mind the possibility that bathhouses had been arenas for experimentation where architects of the era proved themselves. This paper presents the results of the evaluation of numerical data obtained by comprehensive onsite analysis of numerous bathhouse buildings built during the first two hundred years of the Ottoman State covering four major political periods and points out to some changing architectural preferences possibly due to political changes.
