Abstract

In this essay, two sarcophagi that we found during survey of Byzantine settlements around Alacadağ in 2016 at Zeytin region of Belören (Muskar) village of Demre district, are evaluated their position, form and decoration in the Byzantine art.The lids of the sarcophagi specific to Lycia, the period in which they were created and whom they were created by is not clear because there are no inscriptions on the sarcophagi of the leaf and cross motifs on the surface of the lids reveal that this sarcophagi may have been made during the Early Byzantine period in the 5th or 6th century. In this period, it is known that such sarcophagi were made only for saints, clergyman, emperors or rich noble people in the places of the churches. The location of the sarcophagi on the side of a pathway, use since antiquity has been an extraordinary feature for this period. People who lived in the region during the early Byzantine period were buried in pit graves that opened into the ground near the settlers. Therefore, the sarcophagi here must contain the bodies of religious men or important people. The hole in the side face of the sarcophagus is a feature of the sarcophagus containing the relics of the saints. There is a hole in the side face of the sarcophagus number 1 which is a unique feature of sarcophagus containing relics of the saints. This hole, which we think is original, should probably be related to the myrrh cult which is common in Orthodox liturgy
