Abstract
During the course of the 2008-2009 surveys in Zenonopolis, the birth place of emperor Zeno; reused ancient architectural pieces, the necropolis area, a mountain fortress and the ruins of a church have been documented. The church, which is the main topic of this text, displays a basilical plan with three naves. In spite of its poor state of preservation, many data related to its architecture have been gathered. Construction technique and especially stone pieces of architectural decoration refer to similarities with the architecture of the Alahan Monastery complex. An inscription, which was found in early 20th century in Zenonopolis was dated to the year 488; based on the content of the inscription, the researchers suggested that a church dedicated to St Socrates should have stood at this spot. The particular location and architecture of the church encourage one to think on the probable share of emperor Zeno (and his brother) who supported building activities in the region.
