Abstract

The paper will be a brief presentation on the state of art of the historic development of archaeo-logical site management in Turkey as exemplified at Karatepe Aslantaş. The archaeological site of Karatepe Aslantaş reputed with its sculptures, orthostats, bilingual inscriptions had been extensively excavated from 1947 to 1957 exposing remains of a hitherto unknown Late Hittite kingdom. As it was the conventional practice of those years, the excavation team had taken a decision to aban-don the site, starting a new project somewhere else. Halet Çambel one of the young members of the team had decided to stay at the site in the prospect of preserving the remains in their original environment, a novel concept for this time. On this line Çambel after an arduous search established contact and collaboration with the leading figure Cesare Brandi not only in preservation but also on restoration of the site. It would be an understatement to consider what had been accomplished within the frame-work of this project simply as conservation and restoration of architectural remains. The methodology and extensive documentation meticulously carried out at Karatepe Aslantaş stands now as one of the earliest and most extensive example of such work. Çambel continued working for the management of the site until her death constructing protective shelters over the remains, the first in Turkey and one of the earliest in the world, taking measures for the protection of natural environment, developing awareness among the local communities. It should be taken into consideration that Çambels achievements were far ahead of her time conceptually and in practice. If at present Karatepe Aslantaş stands as a fully developed open-air site museum within its cultural environment it is consequential to Çambels far reaching vision and insistence that lasted for over a half century. Along with Çambels work at Karatepe Aslantaş the paper will also be touching on the historic development of conservation, restoration and site management from the 19th century on.
