Abstract
Sculptures, figurines, figured stone objects, stone vessels, beads, stone walking sticks, bone plaques, and similar other objects; public buildings and some burial customs dated to the early phase of the Northern Mesopotamian Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPNA, approximately 9800-9200 BC, and PPNA-PPNB transition period, approximately 9200-8800 BC) provide important clues for the relevant period’s belief systems, socio-cultural structures and the study of the art of depiction. However, the interpretation of these finds is mostly carried out on a symbolic based belief or ritual concepts, and very little research is done on the iconographic features and regional distribution and differences of these objects. After the archaeological studies carried out in recent years, in addition to the increasing number of settlements settled in Northern Mesopotamia in the early stages of Pre-Pottery Neolithic, the art of depiction of the period also provides important information on symbolic and ritual organizations of the period. Along with being interpreted mostly through the concept of symbolism, these findings indicate that the iconography approach of the region is varied within itself. This study aims to introduce a general overview of the information that we have on the stone vessels, figured stone plaques, figured bone plaques, pillars/stelae, public buildings, some wall decorations, stone walking sticks and some burial customs and their regional development (similarities and differences they have shown in the regional context) which are important for the art of depiction, rituals and symbolism understanding of the region in the early stages of Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPNA and PPNA-PPNB).
