Abstract
A marble inscribed grave stele was discovered during the 2014 season of the Archaeological Surveys of Kocaeli and its Environs within the boundaries of the İnebeyli District of today’s town of Karamürsel (Prainetos). The grave stele, except for the fracture on the left side, is in a very good condition and is carved into two panels in relief with triangular pediment. According to the Greek inscription engraved in a single line on the pediment, the name of Glykea, the daughter of Menacrates, is mentioned in this stele. In the panel scenes depicted on top of each other, two separate issues related to burials in relief were the subject matter. Above, a Symposium scene is depicted and a female figure is sitting opposite to a male figure lying in the Kline, and two young servants, a boy and a girl, holding a drinking cup in their hands. In the lower panel scene, around a female figure stretching along the Kline, six figures took their place in the mourning scene with different movements. The ancient Prainetos (Karamürsel) district is located in the territory of the capital Nicomedia (Izmit) due to its location to the south of Astakos (Izmit) Gulf. The fact that the İnebeyli stele was multi-stage, the depiction of the scene in the lower panel, the dramatic processing of mourning in the dead house, and similar examples of craftsmanship, especially in the Late Hellenistic Period steles, suggest that this stele was produced in a workshop in Nicomedia or in its territory in the Late Hellenistic Period.
