Abstract

Since the Early Iron Age, female figures depicted on tombstones have begun to appear in the Greek culture from the Archaic period. The putting of grave stelae into the graves as an image (Kouros and Kore) of the mortals allows them to present the best evidence of society and culture at the time they were carved. Therefore, studies of female figures depicted on grave stelae, death perception in Archaic and Classical periods, tradition of grave, and especially woman’s place in society, are trying to understand female perception. In the ancient Greek society, we see that women are responsible for the growing of the children and the housekeeping, isolated from social life. From the end of the Archaic Period, it is understood that the rise of democracy, and especially the laws of Pericles, make the woman more active in social life. With the new trends in sculpture, the most striking feature of sculptures in artistic mobility and diversity is the attainment of divinity and perfectism (idealism). The female figure depicted on the grave stellae is always emphasized to be “arete”(virtue), with her child in her arms, his husband or with her familiy. It is understood that as an effect of the idealism existing in the Classical Period art, an image is created for the posture of the woman, that is, idealized.
