Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Method: One hundred and two patients who undergone inpatient treatment for drug- or alcohol dependency (N=80) or borderline personality disorder (N=22) were given the CTQ. For the criterion validity 90 individuals without any physical and psychiatric disorder were included to the study. Results: The principal axis factor analysis was performed on the 102 "clinical" and 90 "non-clinical" individuals. The results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation indicated four factors, which were labeled physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect, and physical neglect. Cronbach's alpha for the Total Scale was 0.95 and for the factors ranged from 0.71 to 0.92, indicating high internal consistency. Based on the analyses using t-test and analysis of variance, the scores of the CTQ factors and Total Scale showed significantly differences between the patients and controls, indicating criterion validity. Conclusions: These initial findings suggest the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the CTQ.
