Abstract
Purpose: Percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty is being increasingly utilised in patients with ischemic coronary syndromes. Percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty serves as an excellent model to study human reperfusion injury. The purpose of this study was to examine whether percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty induces free radicals. Methods: We measured whole blood reduced glutathione, plasma malondialdehyde, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in 22 patients who underwent percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty and in 15 control subjects who underwent coronary angiography. Blood samples were taken before and after percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty and coronary angiography. Results: Aspartate aminotransferase and creatinin kinase-MB values were not different between before and after the procedure. Arrhythmias were not appeared during hospitalisation. Although there were no change in the malondialdehyde levels, reduced glutathione levels were increased after percutenous transluminal coronary angioplasty (p
