Abstract

This research was carried out as correlational descriptive design study to investigate the aim of determining mental problems and other problematic areas of nursing students. The study included the students in School of Nursing; Atatürk University. The data were collected using personal information form; Symptom Check List (SCL-90-R) and Problem Scanning Inventory (PSI) from 314 students between 1 and 15 March 2004. In the evaluation of the data, Kruskal wallis, correlation and one-way variance analysis and t test were used. It was found out that twenty-eight percent of 314 students included in the research sample was in the first class; 72.5 % of the students; were 20 or over years old. The level of mental demonstration of the students was found on the verge (1.0±0.5) of the sub-scales of SCL-90-R, the scale of depression, interpersonal vulnerability, anger-hostile and somatization were found as slightly problematic with 1.2 and for anxiety with 1.1 average point. The highest averages in PSI subgroups were observed in problem areas about future, school and human relationships. The relationship between the level of class of the students and having a chronic disease, with SCL – 90-R and PSI was significant (p
