Abstract

Sigmund Freud's article "The Uncanny" has been a source of inspiration in the fields of aesthetics and the philosophy of art. "Uncanny" refers to an unsettling feeling. In psychic terms, the term "uncanny" refers a feeling of terror and a sense of loss of control, even for a moment, although this concept can also be thought of in terms of aesthetics, and so can be of interest to the arts. When viewed from the perspective of aesthetics, it is seen that the uncanny is related to the sublime. A visible relationship exists between the sublime, as one of the fundamental categories of modern aesthetics, and the uncanny. The way comedy can fend off feelings of terror can offer an opportunity to think about comedy in terms of its relationship with the uncanny. Finally, the relationship between the uncanny and the abject is another field of aesthetics. This study, which offers thoughts on different categories of aesthetics, also focuses on representations of the uncanny in art and its influence on the philosophy of art.
