Abstract

The French revolution, which broke out in 1798, did not seek to found the republic by abolishing monarchy. The republic was not considered as an alternative to monarchy by the revolutionary forces, since it was generally accepted that the republic was appropriate for the small states of antiqiuty or the U.S. type of federal states. Furthermore, even among the intellectuals of that time who can be named as "early republicans" there were some proposing that the republic could not get along well with the social and political condiüon in France. However a republican wave dramatically began to rise ali över the country following the King's escape from Paris and his arrest in Varennes. Within this republican uprising, the term of republic didnot refertojust a political regime in which there would be no placefortheKing and ali of the political authorities vrould be determined by elections. At the same time, the republic was considered as a political form in which the principles of "liberty, eqııality and fraternity" would have their concrete meanings and a kind of direct democracy would appear. The revolutionary boıırgeoisie reacted violently against ali those republican movements. The hostility to republicanism was inevitable for bourgeoisie, because their gains could be saved only by putting an end to the Revolution and republicanism means to accelerate the Revolution process for a radical transformation.
