Abstract

In this article, the anti-RPP (the Republican People's Party = Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi) and anti-DP (the Democrat Party= Demokrat Parti) struggles and statements of those Turkish politicians, who were called as "Extremist Conservative Democrats" and who established the Nation Party, the third biggest party of that time, are analysed. The common feature of these politicians was their claims that the prö-democracy and pro-freedom statements of the DP's founders were not genuine and that these DP members, in cooperation with President İnönü, undermined "the spirit of 1946". In the article, the problematic aspect of that era's perception of freedom will be studied and it will be underlined that, in spite of its "pro-democracy and "pro-freedom" standing, the DP had been an authoritarian and repressive party to a great extent even in the period when it was in opposition. Thus, at the end, the genuinity of "the spirit of 1946", on which the successive central rightist parties tried to base their legitimacy, will be questioned.
