Abstract

Social contract theories are the most widely deliberated and discussedof the theories striving to explain the origin of the state with the influence ofthe current liberal order. Thomas Hobbes, on the other hand, diverges fromthe other social contract theoreticians both in its absolutist views and thesystematic and materialist perspective on which his social contract theory isbased upon. Friedrich Nietzsche, though, is not one of the first names tocome to mind when the subject is political philosophy although his viewshave nurtured two vastly different political currents such as nazism andanarchism. Nietzsche's style which is far from systematic and highly literaryhas also played a part in this. However, if due diligence is shown, it becomesapparent that Nietzsche has a certain political philosophy. This philosophy isespecially potent to direct serious critique to the social contract theory. Moreover, similarities between the philosophies of Hobbes and Nietzscherenders the comparison of the optimistic nihilism and the social contracttheory of Thomas Hobbes especially interesting.
