Abstract

The effects of post space preparation on apical seal of endodontically treated teeth was studied. 68 single rooted fresh human teeth were prepared chemomechanically. In group A; teeth were obturated with vertical condensation technique only 5mm apical part of the roots. Remaining teeth in group B and C were obturated with gutta Percha using the lateral condensation technique. Then the post spaces were prepared by removing the gutta percha by using either endodontic pluggers or Gates Glidden drills immediately in group A and after 72 hours in group B. After the post space preparations the teeth soaked in Indian ink for 7 days, then decalcified in a 5% nitric acid solution and dehydrated in alcohoLThe teeth were cleared in methyl salicylate. A linear measurement of apical leakage was recorded for each tooth with a stereomicroscope. The 3 groups in which the post space was prepared by either vertical condensation technique, or with Gates Glidden drills after 72 hours or heated endodontic pluggers at the same appointment exhibited less apical leakage when compared with the rest of the groups.
