Abstract

In order for the acrylic used in the preparation of denture bases, to serve a sensitive existence such as the human organism, they have to have perfection in terms of certain properties. In patients who use denture bases with acrylic resins, sometimes symptomatic inflammatory reactions may be observed in the mucosal tissues. These types of reactions may both result from traumatic and candidal infections due to the local irritation of the denture bases resins. The residual monomer (le: methyl methacrylate) released during the use of polymethyl methacrylate denture base resins constitute the most important of the reactions which may be observed. In our research residual monomer amounts of acrylic resins obtained by the conventional heat polymerization method, by the injection moulding technique which has recently become popular and by the microwave energy polymerization process have been compared and a comparative assessment has been made. The quantitative analysis of the 45 test samples (15 from each acrylic resin material used to determine the residual monomer amount) have been made by the high performance liquid chromatographic technique. As a result of the statistical examination of the data obtained, significant differences have been observed among the three groups. Especially, the resin polymerized by microwave energy with the least residual monomer amount seems to be a biologically satisfactory material.
