Abstract

Overdentures have gained popularity as an alternative to conventional complete dentures with their advantages such as preservation of proprioceptive mechanism and alveolar bone, increase in retention and stability. However there are only a few studies evaluating the masticatory performance of these applications electromyographically. The aim of this investigation was to compare the electromyographic activities of m.masseter and m.temporalis anterior of overdenture patients to that of complete denture wearers with different time spans of edentulism. The series of patients in the present study comprised 30 individuals of ages ranging from 50 to 69. They were recently provided with dentures which were constructed using conventional clinical principles and techniques. Ten of the patients had overdentures. The remaining 20 complete denture wearers were divided into two groups of 10 subjects thereby establishing 2 groups of 1-10, and over 10 years of duration of edentulism. The results showed no significant difference among the three groups, according to their muscle activities. Only the overdenture group showed statistical difference between the ipsilateral masseter and anterior temporal muscles (p
