Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of three different cavity liners to avoid microleakage when placed under amalgam restorations. We used 30 extracted caries free human permanent molar teeth to prepare mesio-occlusodistal cavities for amalgam restorations with margins 2mm above the enamo-cement junction at one approximal side and 2mm below the enamo-cement junction at the other side. Three different liner materials of copal varnish, resin adhesive, and a glass ionomer were applied under amalgam restorations as ten teeth for each material group. Following the restorations, the teeth were submitted to thermocycling and stained in a 0.5% basic fucsin solution for 24 hours. The teeth were sectioned into two under water irrigation at mesiodistal direction and examined under stereomicroscope. In all three groups of teeth at the gingival margin of the cavities microleakage was detected more frequently at the dentin level than the enamel level. Also the microleakage scores of the Copalite(r) group were statistically significantly higher than the scores of the Liner Bond 2(r) and the Vitrebond 3M(r) groups (P
