Abstract
In this study the effects of gamma irradiation at various therapeutic dosage levels on the surface hardness of a composite resin (Charisma), a polyacid modified composite resin (Dyract), a resin modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) and a amalgam (Cavex) are investigated. A total of 30 cylindrical specimens (5 mm diameterX2 mm height) were prepared for each restorative material according to the manufacturers' instructions using plexiglass molds. Then, samples were stored in distilled water for 24 h. The six samples of each restorative materials were not exposed to gamma irradiation (control group) but the six samples of restorative materials were exposed to gamma irradiation at levels of 2, 10, 50, 80 Gy. The surface hardness measurements of samples were made with a Barcoll impressor. The data of average measurements were statistically evaluated by Analysis of Variance and Duncan test. The surface hardness values were increased with the application of irradiation and this increases were linearly related to the gamma irradiation dosage, but increase was statistically significant only between some groups of Vitremer. The results of this investigation revealed that gamma irradiation does not have a deleterious effect on the surface hardnesses of restorative materials.
