Abstract

Air abrasive technology offers several advantages over conventional handpieces. The technique utilizes kinetic energy (Ek) from alumina particles entained in a high velocity stream of air to remove tooth structure and the technique has been recently named as kinetic cavity preparation (KCP). The aim of this study was to compare microleakage of restorative materials that applied to the cavities which was prepared with air abrasive system and conventional method. For this reason, 48 extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were used. The teeth were randomly divided into 8 groups. The vestibuler surfaces of teeth in first four groups were prepared class V cavities with air abrasive unit (Micadent, Medidenta Inc, Woodside, NY).The teeth in other four groups were prepared class V cavities with aerator and diamond bur (high speed). Then, the cavities were restored a composite resin (Pekalite), a polyacid modified resin composite (Dyract), a resin modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) and a conventional glass ionomer cement (Ketac-Fil) according to the manufacturer's instructions, respectively. After the finishing procedures (Soflex discs: 3M Dental Product), the teeth were kept in 0.5 % basic fucsin for 24 hour. Afterwards, the teeth bisected from the middle point of the filling, the photographs of the section were taken by stereomicroscope and evaluation of microleakage was done. No statistically significant microleakage difference was observed between air abrasive cavities and conventional cavities at Pekalite, Vitremer and Ketac-Fil groups but statistically differences were found at Dyract groups. The lower microleakage scores were found Pekalite groups than other restorative material groups.
