Abstract

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate marginal adaptation of Class II cavities restored with five different packable resin composites, utilising scanning electron microscope (SEM). In this study 25 freshly extracted human molars were used. The cavities were prepared following a standardized pattern in which the Class II cavity had a length of 3.0 mm, width of 2.0 mm and depth of 15 mm occlusally. The proximal box had an axial depth of 1.5 mm and a buccolingual width of 4.0 mm. The cervical margin was located 1.0 mm below the cementoenamel junction. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups of 5 each. All cavity surfaces were conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid, rinsed and the excess water was removed. Prime&Bond NT as dentin bonding agent was used for all cavities. The teeth were then restored according to manufacturer's instructions with Surefil, Solitaire, Alert, Filtek P60, and Prodgy Condensable. After the restorations were completed, the specimens were finished and polished with aliminiumoxide-coated disc and thermocycled for 100 cycles between S0C and 550C with a dwell time of30-seconds in each bath. Teeth were sectioned along the mesiodistal direction. The gap of cervical margin of each section was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope at 600 magnification. Results of this study showed that, none of the packable resin composite did not eliminate the total marginal gap in Class II cavities.
