Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The association between platelet activity and diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dyslipemia has been uncertain. We wanted to investigate the association of mean platelet volume with metabolic syndrome.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mean platelet volume levels were investigated in healthy participants and patients with metabolic syndrome and antropometric and demographic parameters were compared. We also seeked correlation of mean platelet volume with metabolic syndrome components and also age and gender.RESULTS: Mean platelet volume levels were higher in patients with metabolic syndrome than in normals. The mean platelet volume levels had positive correlation with hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, body mass index and waist circumference in patients with MS, but there was not any correlation with dyslipemia, age, gender and Hemoglobin A1c. CONCLUSIONS: Mean platelet volume is associated with metabolic syndrome. We may say that as metabolic syndrome components are concerned the presence of hypertension, obesity and diabetes mellitus constitute an increase in mean platelet volumes, suggesting that platelet activity may have a relation with those cardiovascular risk factors.
