Abstract
In the context of religion and politics; there are important differences between Islamic political thought and Christian political thought. While a line is drawn between religious and worldly authority with "the Doctrine of the Two Swords" in Christian political thought, in Islam there is no "the Doctrine of the Two Swords" separating spiritual and secular authorities. Theoretically, the authority of caliph and ruler is united in one and the same person. In this study, the similarities between St. Augustine's political thought and the political ideas of “pro-patience school” in Islamic political thought will be addressed. These similarities are as follow: the absence of the ideal regime, the concept of justice, the proposal of obedience against tyrannical power, the idea that the authoritarian will be punished for tyranny, and the tyranny is both a test and a punishment for those who are ruled. This study is considered important and distinctive, taking into account that although being referred in the works on Christian political thought, only two of St. Augustine's books have been translated into Turkish, and the current and ongoing controversy over religion and state relations in Islam remains significant, especially in the context of the Arab Spring, which started in 2010.
