Abstract

In this work, effects of various ions and flotation reagents in chromite-serpentine flotation were investigated with the aim of overcoming the problems encountered in selective flotation of chromite and serpentine. In order to examine the adsorption mechanism of reagents in chromite-serpentine flotation, electrokinetic potential and zero point of charge (z.p.c) of clean (pure) chromite and serpentine were determined and effects of various ions and flo-tation reagents on surface properties of chromite and serpentine were examined. Zero point of charge of chromite occurs at pH=6.3 while that of serpentine occurs at pH=5.1 The curves of variation of electrokinetic potential as a function of pH show that H+ ve OH- ions are the potential determining ions for chromite and serpentine. In the flotation tests, the best results were obtained with mixture of Aero801 and Aero825. The results of flotation studies show that commercial concentrate containing 48.84 % Cr2O3 is obtainable with an 88.00 % Cr2O3 rate of recovery.
