Abstract

This study was carried out on the trees of Adana Topağı, Ayvalık, Çilli, Domat, Gemlik, Karamürsel Su, Manzanilla, Mavi and Memecik 9 olive cultivars and Arbequina IRTA-18 olive clone located at the olive germplasm orchard of the Univ. Cukurova, Faculty of Agriculture. The aim of this research was to determine the fruit quality characteristics and the chilling requirements of the experimented olive cultivars. The chilling requirements were calculated according to the standard and chill unit methods and the fruit quality characteristics of the experimented olive cultivars were determined by pomological analysis. As a result, Adana Topağı olive cultivar was found to be the lowest chilling requiring cultivar (247 CU and 346 hours) and it was followed by Çilli, Mavi, Gemlik and Ayvalık. Domat olive cultivar was found to be the highest chilling requiring cultivar (333 CU and 552 hours). In the pomological analysis, the highest fruit weight was determined in Karamürsel Su (9.44) cultivar while the smallest fruits were obtained from Arbequina IRTA-18 (1.09) olive clone. In addition, Domat (9.96 g), Çilli (6.90 g), Mavi (6,61g) and Adana Topağı (6.0 g) were determined to be the cultivars with big fruits. These results will lead growers to select and arrange olive orchards according to the climatic conditions of the regions. Also, it will help to identify the reasons of the unproductivity. It could be recommended to do top working on unfruitful olive trees with the suitable chilling requiring cultivars adaptable to the region and built up new plantations with these suitable olive cultivars.
