Abstract

This study aimed to determine the energy equivalents and energy use efficiency of the inputs and outputs used in honey production by beekeeping enterprises in Mersin. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews from 81 beekeeping enterprises selected by stratified random sampling method in Mersin province. Data were collected in October and November 2020, analyzed, and interpreted in terms of enterprise sizes. According to the number of hives, the enterprises are divided into three groups: 30-100 hives in the first group, 101-180 hives in the second group, and 181 and more hives were in the third group. In terms of enterprise size, 41 beekeeping enterprises are in the first group, 19 beekeeping enterprises are in the second group, and 21 beekeeping enterprises are in the third group. Total energy input was 61.85 MJ in the first group, 66.58 MJ in the second group, and 62.34 MJ in the third group, and it was calculated as 63.08 MJ according to the average of the enterprises. Fuel had the highest ratio within the energy sources in all groups. The energy output/input ratio was 1.61 in the first group, 1.75 in the second group, 2.14 in the third group, and it was found as 1.78 on average. The specific energy was calculated as 7.91 MJ kg-1 in the first group, 7.25 MJ kg-1 in the second group, and 5.95 MJ kg-1 in the third group, and it was determined as 7.14 MJ kg-1 according to the average of the enterprises. Since non-renewable energy resources are limited and environmentally harmful, the fact that the share of non-renewable energy resources in the total energy inputs is lower in the enterprises in the third group can be considered as an advantage. It can be said that increasing the number of hives in beekeeping will positively increase the efficiency of energy use.
