Abstract

The consistent increase in the visibility of the phenomenon of sports in the society throughout history has made it worth studying from a sociological perspective. The relationship between sport and health has been strengthened with concepts such as physical activity and exercise and sports have become a whole range of activities in which everybody is expected to participate. However, sport is such a wide sociological phenomenon that it cannot be addressed solely as activities undertaken for health. Studying the reasons why individuals engage in sport is important for the better understanding of the phenomenon of sports. The research conducted in this respect has increased in the recent years. The Eurobarometer survey studies of the Council of Europe are carrying out work directed at the citizens of the member countries of the European Union by including the concepts of sports and physical activity. Issues such as the levels of participation in sports, places in which sports and other physical activities are undertaken, as well as incentive and disincentive factors in sports participation are studied. It has been found that European citizens’ level of participation in sports and physical activities has decreased over the years. Although the Eurobarometer surveys provide us with descriptive data regarding sports and physical activity with such variables as age, gender, education level and economic status, it is clear that the phenomenon of sports requires a much deeper analyses.
