Abstract
Plato rejects democracy with the reference to both the practical dilemmas of democratic rule and his own epistemological and moral concerns. According to Plato, an individual’s performing a profession that is proper with his own nature indispensable for happiness of the society and attainment of the justice. He targets democracy that shakes the professions hierarchy, includes change and multiplicity, and claims equality. For him, the 'demos' is a mass of people that should not interfere in the governance. Jacques Rancière objects to these views and places demos on the ground of political struggle. According to him, the democracy that Plato criticizes is the democracy in real terms. Rancière, who objects to the Platonist paradigm that reduces politics to the polis order, also accuses the modern and contemporary period democracy opponents of reducing politics to the polis order and not treating democracy as independent from the conception of power. For Rancière who gives priority to the concept of political more than politics, this concept points to the interruption of the polis order and there is dissesnsus on its basis. The idea of dissensus is linked with going beyond what is ascribed role. In this study, firstly Plato's criticism of democratic governance will be examined, then, in this sense, objections to Plato's critique of democracy will be raised with reference to Rancière.
