Abstract

This study includes the analysis of transformation process of public sphere in Turkey based on the wedding TV shows which can be considered as a hybrid form of reality show and talk show formats. In the Western literature, the most preeminent theme of studies carried out on reality shows are about the distortion of the balance of public and private spheres in favour of private sphere and occupation of public sphere by individualist culture.; On the other hand, in Turkey, where a non-Western modernity experience is prominent, these topics, regarded as private and domesticated, become visible and speakable through TV shows, which creates a culturally specific new form of tension between the realities represented in these shows and substantial social reality. As a result of this tension, wedding TV shows in Turkey go beyond their purposes as television programs and rather than downgrading the public discussions, they initiate a new publicity debate on categories like gender, representations of womanhood and manhood in these shows and family, nationality and religion.“Esra Erol’da Evlen Benimle” was taken as a case study. An audience survey about wedding TV shows, which revealed how audience interpret the transformation experienced in the public sphere, was conducted. The engagement of different experience fields should not be considered as a promise of freedom or a cultural time of decadence; but as a dialogue between individual experiences of daily life and representations on television
