Abstract

The subject of this research is to try to read Robert Bloch’s Psycho and Yusuf Atılgan’s Anayurt Oteli within the framework of psychoanalytic theory founded by Sigmund Freud. The first Turkish edition of Bloch’s novel was published under the name “Three Spirited Man” in 1962 and the first edition of Anayurt Oteli in 1973 and these first editions were used in the study. Both films were adapted into cinema with their original names by Alfred Hitchcock (Psyco) in 1960 and by Ömer Kavur (Anayurt Oteli) in 1987. Since the textual originality of the novels was preserved in the films, the study was carried out on the novels. The Oedipus Complex is used as the main theme in both novels. The main characters are portrayed as quite similar to their sexual orientation, relationships with their mothers and obsessive behavior. Hotels were used as locations in both novels and rooms numbered 6 were preferred for the transfer of important events. The authors wrote a similar ending for their characters and both novels ended with the characters’ guilt over the murders they committed and with suicide. The non-textualities in the adaptations to the cinema were attempted to be interpreted through their directors.
