Abstract

In this work we focus on the birth of Turkish historiography, historical development, phases it went through, and its maturity. Written records of early Turkish historiography came into being in pre-Islamic period. These documents are well recorded. After the Turks embraced Islam, accumulated knowledge of Islamic history was utilized, leading to the birth of Turkish-Islamic historiography. Beginning with the Seljuk period, Turkish historiography developed into a separate field of study using epics of Turkish historiography. The works called “Selçuknameler” can be considered to be the starting point of independent Turkish historiography. Ottoman historiography began to develop with the foundation of the Ottoman Empire and its advance. With the rise of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman historiography reached the level of maturity and it continued to flourish after the classical epoch. From the XVIII. century the Ottoman historiography found itself a new course of progress, thus laying the foundations for the birth of modern Turkish historiography.
