Abstract

Estate records are quite valuable documents for the clarification of socio-economic structure of the Ottoman cities. Therefore, estate owners existing in the judicial records of Ruse (R 38) belonging to the years of 1741- 1742 were utilized in respect to the family structure, residence, social status, profession, wealth and objects they used. According to the data the male figures living in Ruse had one wife and a few children. Families in Ruse usually lived in the houses which had two rooms, an oven, a cellar, a courtyard and a garden. Settlement place and profession of the families determined the wealth sources of them. Also the life standard of the families took shape according to this peculiarities. House objects and clothes used in Ruse had local, regional and imperial characteristics. It shows that the Ottoman society had a rich and colorful life. Cultural and religious components were also important for the Ottoman social life. The philosophy of life in the Ottoman society took shaped around this kind of components.
