Abstract
There is a famous saying in the Islamic world: “Qur’an was revealed in Mecca; read in Teheran and inscribed in Istanbul.” Istanbul, a center of civilization, became the place where the calligraphy was developed and illustrated with best examples. One can see best calligraphy designs in mosques, museums, libraries and houses. In addition, there are unique examples of calligraphy in Hazîres (small graveyards) or historical cemeteries. Istanbul still assumes the leadership in the art of calligraphy. Istanbul’s main tenance of the calligraphy tradition is as influential in this as its rich art heritage. Today this rich heritage can be observed with a short tour around Istanbul. One can observe beautiful calligraphy designs in various public and religious constructions and cemeteries.
