Abstract

Cementation is the most common and the oldest process among case hardening processes. Principally, carburizing is a heat treatment to increase surface hardness and wear resistance of components. This process is carried out in a medium which supplied carbon at elevated temperature for low carbon steels. In this study, effect of BaCO3 was examined on case depths of two different steels (DIN CK 10 and DIN 16MnCr5). Treatments were carried out at 900 °C for 9 hours by increasing BaCO3 quantity at ratios of 10 % wt, 20 % wt and 30 % wt. Samples were furnace cooled in pack and then they were reheated above austenite temperature and water quenched. The case depths were measured by means of microhardness tester under 9.81 N load. Optical microscopy was used to examine the microstructure of the carburized steels. It has been shown that increase of BaCO3 quantity affected the case depth of the carburized steels.
