Abstract

Turkmen Turkish and Standard Turkish spoken in Turkey belng to the SouthWestern Turkish/Oguz sub-group of Proto-Turkish. The pattern of use of the present continuous suffix is seen as one of the most important morphological criterion for the determination of the dialect groups of Turkish and Turkmen Turkish. Mainly starting from the 11th Century and especially after the 13th century, the Oguz tribes left their fatherland and settled in various regions of Anatolia; but the majority of the Oguz Tribes stayed in the fatherland and most of them live in the Republic of Turkmenistan today. The historical and ethnic ties between Anatolia and Turkmenistan manifest themselves in the language and dialects. The suffix -yar /-yär of today’s written language of the Turkmen Turkish and the suffix -yor of standard written language in Anatolian Turkish are used to correspond to the suffix of the present continuous tense. However, these suffixes which occurred as a result of the phonetic change of the auxiliary verbs yöre- / yat- and yoru- /yürü-, vary considerably in terms of the variants in dialects of the Turkmen and Turkish spoken in Turkey. In this study, the status of present continuous tense suffix in the dialects of the Turkmen Turkish will be evaluated and compared with the general forms of the present continuous tense suffix in the dialects of standard Turkish in Turkey
